A few weeks ago, my husband and I spent an amazing weekend at The Lakehouse Inn in Geneva, Ohio with fellow travel writers and bloggers. We were invited to check out Geneva-on-the-Lake and stay at the lovely family-owned Bed and Breakfast. The Lakehouse Inn has rooms inside the main house, but also has 4 cottages, and a beach house overlooking the beautiful lake. You might wonder, what are you doing at a lake house in the middle of Fall? While I definitely want to go back in the Summer, it was actually an amazing and relaxing experience to go during the colder months. Let me share with you some fun things to do when in Geneva Ohio this time of the year!
Things To Do When in Geneva Ohio
Stay at The Lakehouse Inn
This boutique resort is located along the southern shore of Lake Erie in Geneva-on-the-Lake. It’s run by the wonderful Fagnilli family. Let me tell you, they are one of the most down-to-earth people I’ve met. They are all about the community and always support local businesses because of them. They even toured us around and brought us to different local establishments, while sharing so many inspiring stories. I feel like after that weekend, I’ve been supporting more local and smaller businesses. Listening to them was such an eye-opener and I only hope that they continue to inspire more people. If you ever plan to stay at The Lakehouse Inn, I’m pretty sure you’ll run into one of them. But that’s not all why I recommend staying there which leads me to the next to do.
Enjoy Farm-to-Table Cuisine at Crosswinds Grille
Their son, Nate, is the Chef at the family-owned Crosswinds Grille, and he comes up with amazing dishes. Their menu changes with the season. Since they only use local ingredients, he comes up with recipes using whatever is in season. Let me tell you, we had an amazing dinner there. You just have to taste it to believe me. Some even go there just for the food. Take for example, he served this super delicious Shrimp & Grits and it blew my mind! He had guests from the South asking what he did with it and he thought they hated his grits. But turns out, they actually LOVE it and said it was the best they’ve ever had. Hey, I lived in Texas for over 5 years and I’ve never tried Shrimp & Grits like this. And then he served this braised beef navel. And again, that blew my mind. It was so flavorful. It’s like melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Everything was delicious – from the salad, to the risotto, all the way to dessert! And on top of that, because they have a full production winery, they know which wine to pair with what dish. They served us different wines per course and it was divine. Like some of the wines they served, I wouldn’t normally order. But the right pairing made all the difference. If you every plan to dine at the Crosswinds Grille, if there’s a set course with wine pairing when you visit, I highly suggest you do that. It’s a delectable experience!
The Lakehouse Inn is one of the twenty-plus wineries along the wine trail, which is at the heart of Ohio Wine Country. So plan a Lake Erie Wines & Vines tour with your spouse or even with a group of friends. I suggest going during the Fall or Winter, so it’s cool and perfect for walking and checking out the wineries one by own without breaking a sweat. I don’t know about you, but I love drinking wine when it’s chilly outside. Oh, and I heard the Fall Foliage is amazing here. So if you like to plan ahead, make sure to visit around September to October. I’m planning to do that next year.
Pamper at The Spa
The Lakehouse Inn has a Spa! So after a day of wine tours, it’s a great way to unwind, relax, and get pampered. I had a relaxing facial there that included a head and foot massage. I dozed off! It was wonderful.
I feel like the Spa, the wine tours, and the delicious dinner at Crosswinds Grille are all pretty good reasons to visit The Lakehouse Inn for a quick Fall or Winter getaway. If you also live in Pittsburgh, Geneva-on-the-lake is just about a 2-hr drive. So if you need to get away from the city, The Lakehouse Inn is the perfect place to unwind. But aside from those, there are other places to visit and things to do when you’re in the area.
